Leadership Council

Currently the Academic Director of Aspen Public Schools, starting in 2016-17, Ms. Sands is an experienced educational leader who has served in administration for the past six years. She began her administrative career in Central Unified School District, and joined Valley Preparatory Academy as Site Director in 2014-15, working as part of the founding team that created and launched Aspen Public School, growing a replication and starting an indigenous charter management organization in Fresno. Ms. Sands previously served as the children’s director at a church for five years and prior to that, taught for eight years in classroom-based schools in Clovis Unified School District and an independent study charter school in Fresno.

Ms. Sands holds a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from California State University Fresno, a multiple subject teaching credential from Fresno Pacific University, a Master’s degree and administrative credential from California State University Fresno. Ms. Sands has spent time volunteering in the community including mentoring teen moms and sitting on the founding board of a local charter school.

The members of our Leadership Council are Oakland natives, residents, parents, grandparents, former teachers, principals, and alumni of Oakland public schools. Our leaders have deep connections to Oakland and strong backgrounds in education. The Leadership Council supports and guides our work in the best interest of Oakland students.
